Post something detailed, thought provoking and controversial. I dare ya. Post it here as a reply or on your own journal. Be deep or just outrageous. Post something more than your breakfast menu or a meme. I double dog dare you!!
My example:
As a society we should once again have standards- most especially for behavior. I'm thinking this mostly in the "real world" where people seem to think that blinkers and common courtesy are optional. Problem is how would we police something like this? I really don't think it can, or should be legislated. If courtesy and manners became the norm instead of the exception would social pressure be enough to maintain it? Is it enough to ever regain it?
Or two for the price of one:
We're a historical recreation educational society, right?
So, we should try to balance both being as historically accurate as possible and being a comfortable place for people to learn. Otherwise, it's just a camping party in funny clothes. :) If we expect everyone to be perfect from the gate how can anyone new learn? If we have no expectations at all how many will strap on fairy wings, a kilt and a kitana (or recent movie rip-off de jour) and not bother to even try?
I'm not saying that any country or time is better than any other, but it would be nice if an outfit encompassed one at a time- preferably at least close to the 600-1650 time frame.

Date: 2007-11-29 09:56 pm (UTC)I griped in my journal a few posts back that I despair of the effort of the SCA to be all things to all people, ruining the experience for all in the process.
Try having a kingdom in which the camping party in funny clothes doesn't even camp. It's just a party in the park in funny clothes.
My own efforts in raising the authenticity bar have gotten me slapped with the "authenticity nazi" moniker/label, although I'm far from the most accurate person on the block. I have found that the longer I'm in the SCA, the more important it is for me to try to do things more and more like they did it. When I was a shiny-eyed teenager, I didn't know that it's fun to do it their way.
My camping kit is a mixture of period, perioid and hide-it-behind-the-curtain mundane, but I want very much to make it LOOK right. Upping the set dressing helps us to maintain our suspension of disbelief.

Date: 2007-11-29 10:19 pm (UTC)actually i am all over the common courtesy thing, like most mere mortals i occasionally fail at politeness but i try overall to make a point of being courteous. and every time someone makes a "gee, it's so nice you're polite" comment in a "that's so unusual" vein, it makes me sad. how we enforce it i have no idea. i just do my best to do unto others etc...
i like the sentiment of controversy two but am not sure how we would enforce it... and how long would a newcomer have to figure it out etc... puzzling...
