As Nimmer's youngest would say "I am afflicted with the sadness".

Among other things, I'm a huge Ramones fan. I think it's a shame that the creative birthplace of an entire new culture is going away (or at least going to Vagas, apparently) while every place Washington ever stopped to pee is a historical landmark. Maybe it would be better for it to go out with a blaze of glory, instead of like Elvis, bloated and flatulant on the toilet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBGB

The full name is CBGB & OMFUG which stands for "Country Bluegrass Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers"

Here's some classic Ramone's lyrics:

Beat on the Brat

Beat on the brat
Beat on the brat
Beat on the brat with a baseball bat
Oh yeah, oh yeah, uh- oh
What can you do?
What can you do?
With a brat like this always on your back
What can you do? (lose? )

And

We're A Happy Family

We're a happy family
We're a happy family
We're a happy family
Me mom and daddy.
Siting here in Queens
Eating refried beans
We're in all the magazines
Gulpin' down thorazines.
We ain't got no friends
Our troubles never end
No Christmas cards to send
Daddy likes men.
Daddy's telling lies
Baby's eating flies
Mommy's on pills
Baby's got the chills.
I'm friends with the President
I'm friends with the Pope
We're all making a fortune
Sellingd Daddy's dope.

REPEAT
And last but certainly not least, a timely little ditty:

Cretin Hop

There's no stoppin' the cretins from hoppin'
You gotta keep it beatin'
For all the hoppin' cretins.
Cretin! Cretin!
I'm gonna go for a whirl with my cretin girl
My feet won't stop
Doin' the Cretin Hop.
Cretin! Cretin!
1-2-3-4
Cretins wanna hop some more
4-5-6-7
All good cretins go to heaven.

I know. It's been brewing for awhile. Sorry to hear that they couldn't save it after all.

A long time Ramones fan, I can tell you, they helped define American Punk. In 1978, when my hair was spiky and pink they came to town and played the Paramount. One of my friends was a promoter at the time and they were invited to my house (shared with two roomies also friends of promoter) after the show.

During the show someone in the audience punkily threw a beer bottle on stage where it one of them, can no longer remember which but it wasn't Joey, in the arm and gashed him open spectacularly. The Ramones never showed at our house. But god, all of Seattle's punk scene did. I've never seen anything like it.

Man. Walked into the bathroom to find 8 guys lined up along the tub all peeing in harmony. Beer bottles broken in the kitchen sink disposal. Cig butts on all the door jambs. Spit on the flocked wallpaper (I know!).

Wow. Memories.

Gods, those were the days.....cold pizza and warm, flat beer for breakfast. Hell, I may have BEEN at that party, I seem to remember one after the Ramones concert in Portland (but my memory's a bit hazy).

One of the things I never suffered from was hazy memory. I don't know what is worse. Not know what you did or knowing exactly what you did. *laugh*

I'm glad for the memories but also glad that is what they are. Memories. Not my plans for tonight.

Oh, I'm with you there....I enjoy having a "past", but I'm sure glad it's over. Also wish I'd treated my body a bit better in those daysinstead of figuring, in true punk fashion, that I wouldn't live past 30.

heh. I'm as stunned as anyone to find myself here at 47. I look in the mirror and can't believe all the abuse isn't reflected there in spades.

Oh, and my mantra of the time was

I Wanna Be Sedated

and I WAS!

Twenty, twenty, twenty-four hours to go, I wanna be sedated.......

I was in a punk band back in that day, did Ramones covers. Sigh.

Goddamn. This is depressing.

I guess while you were a punk in Seattle, I was one in San Francisco :). Saw a crapload of bands at the Fab Mab and the Stone in San Fran, and the one in Bezerkley.

Saw the Ramones there, but later, about 1981 or 82, I think. In 78 I was still in High School. Gag. Stairway to Heaven! GAG GAG GAG.
