Goode Yule, compliments and bridge mending
Dec. 4th, 2006 04:55 pmAquaterra's Yule feast was a hoot. Bashira out did herself yet again and all of the food was amazing. She even loaded me up with a gallon baggie of her divine candied nuts to take home. I'm sure I'll find a use for them (which would be my stomach if I weren't now on a diet).
The new format was interesting. There was court in two parts, between the courses, as well as dancing, singing and other entertainments. I wasn't watching the clock, but there seemed to be an hour or better between courses. The autocrat also tried something different for the kids as well, there was a kids table, and instead of the feast menu they had corndogs, mac and cheese, etc. I get the concept and understand how hard it can be to get kids to eat period food, but I would loved to have seen kid friendly and period food. I've done it before, so it can be done, but I also realize that they were trying to keep it simple. All in all, I think it went over really well.
I got oodles of compliments on my dress and the new girdle (aka beaded belt) which made me very happy indeed. I got to have some great conversations about the style, and what I'd like to try next. I finished the sleeves by hand, stitched on the lace, sewed them on the gown, and started and finished the girdle during the snow induced down time. I was at the_doctor's place waiting out the snow last Tuesday and as I didn't have access to my dress dummy his ironing board was turned on it’s side and stuffed with pillows to plump it out so the sleeves would sit right. I think it worked fairly well. The girdle wasn't even planned in advance, I just decided to make it on a whim and it works so well with the gown.
I think there may be some bridges being mended too, and while I was always pollyanna enough to hope that they would be one day I'm glad there are at least tenative steps being taken in that direction. Of course after all that's happened I'm cynical enough not to jump into putting my head on the block, or hold my breath, but it's still nice.
